Baby Boy Scarf and Mittens





Materials:
Bernat, Softee Chunky, Bulky Weight Yarn in Denim Heather
Elastic band [optional for mittens]
Hook Size:
1yr.- Size F crochet hook. [1 skein yarn.]
2T- Size G crochet hook. [1 ½ skein yarn.]
3T- Size H crochet hook. [2 skein yarn.]
[For smaller sizes I recommend using a less bulky yarn; such as fingering or baby weight for a newborn set and a size E or F hook.]

Pattern:

Scarf:

Row One: Chain 18, single crochet in back loop only of second chain from hook and each one across. Turn. [17]

Row Two: Chain four [ch does not count as first] insert hook into second chain from hook [of turning chain], yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into second chain from hook [from previous insert spot], yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into stitch directly at base of chain, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook three times. * Insert hook into the top horizontal thread that overlaps previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into bottom horizontal thread that overlaps previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook three times. Repeat from * to end. Turn. [17]

Row Three - Thirty Seven: Repeat row two. [or to length desired]

Row Thirty Eight: Chain one, single crochet in stitch at base of chain and each one across. Tie off. [17]

Fringe: Cut 17 pieces of yarn, about 5 inches long, for each side. Fold one piece in half, creating a loop. Insert hook into first single crochet at edge and through loop created by fold, pull through halfway, catch loose ends of yarn and pull through loop. Pull tight.

[optional] Cut 10 more pieces of yarn, about 3-4 inches long. Make three folds at each end of the scarf, as an accordion, and tie 5 of the pieces of yarn around the fold to hold it in place.

Mitten: [make two]

Round One: Chain 22, slip stitch to first. Chain one, one single crochet in each chain space around. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [22]

Round Two: Chain two [does not count as first, here and throughout], Double Crochet in each around, slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [22]

Round Three: Chain two, Double Crochet in each around, slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [22]

Round Four: Chain one, one single crochet in each chain space around. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [22]

Round Five: Chain two, double crochet in each around, slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [22]

Round Six: chain two, work one half double crochet in back loop only of first [From here to end, use only back loops for all stitches]. One half double crochet in next. Two half double crochet in next. * One half double crochet each of next two, two half double crochet in next. Repeat from * around . Two half double crochet in last. Slip Stitch to first. Do not turn. [30]

Round Seven and Eight: Chain two, one half double crochet in each around. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [30]

For Mitten:

Round Nine: Chain two, one half double crochet in each of first ten. Chain two, Skip ten stitches, one half double crochet in each of last ten. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [20]

Round Ten - Twelve: Chain two, one half double crochet in each around. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [20]

Round Thirteen: Chain two, one half double crochet in each of first two. * decrease one half double crochet with next two [to decrease: yarn over and insert hook into stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook]. One half double crochet in each of next two. Repeat from * around, working into one loop of each of the chains from previous row. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [15]

Round Fourteen: Chain two, one half double crochet in each of first two. * decrease one half double crochet with next two [to decrease: yarn over and insert hook into stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook]. One half double crochet in each of next two. Repeat from * around. One half double crochet in last. Slip stitch to first. Tie Off and sew seam. [12]

For Thumb: Connect yarn into back loop of any one of the skipped stitches of round nine.

Round Ten: Chain two, One half double crochet in each one around, working one half double crochet into side loop of each of the two stitches that separate the mitten from the thumb [where you chained two in round ten of mitten]. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [12]

Round Eleven: Chain two, One half double crochet in each one around. Slip stitch to first. Do not turn. [12]

Round Twelve: Chain two, one half double crochet in each of first two. * decrease one half double crochet with next two [to decrease: yarn over and insert hook into stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook]. One half double crochet in each of next two. Repeat from * around. Slip stitch to first. Tie Off and sew seam. [9]

To Finish: Fold edge of opening of mitten down, creating a fold at the center of the first two rows of double crochet. Insert elastic. Sew the first row of single crochet to the fourth row of single crochet. Turn the whole mitten right-side out.
