Backwards Purl (Tbps)

⇐ Back to Basic Stitches
This is worked much like the purl stitch, accept that it uses the back vertical thread instead of the front. It also looks almost exactly the same, the big difference being that this has more relief and is much bulkier. It would be well used in ribbing or as a light accent to a looser pattern.

Instructions
To begin: Chain any number to length desired.

Foundation: Row one forward: Insert hook into first chain space from hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop. * Insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * keeping all chains on hook. Row one return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Stitch: Row two forward: * Pull yarn forward to front; moving over the strand, insert hook into the space before the next stitch and grab the back vertical bar. Going around this and between the vertical bars bring your hook to the front, pull yarn back to behind your hook, Yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * to last. Row two return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Repeat row two for pattern.
