Tunisian Puff Stitch

⇐ Back to Relief Stitches
This Puff Stitch also creates medium and large puffs. These are done in a way that makes them look like raised, textured drop stitches. The following pattern explains the exact procedure, placing them in a pattern of columns.

To complete a Puff Stitch: * Yarn over and insert hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * two /or three/ more times, working into the same stitch space. Yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops made into that stitch (that is: pull back through loops until you reach the loop of previous stitch in same row. Stop before pulling through this loop).

To begin: Chain in multiples of four to desired length plus two.

Row one forward: Insert hook in next chain space and pull up a loop. * Insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * to end keeping all chains on hook.

Row one return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row two forward: Work a Simple Stitch (Tss) in each of next two. Inserting hook through fabric between vertical threads (as in a Tks) Puff Stitch in next. * Simple Stitch in next three, inserting hook as in a Knit Stitch Puff Stitch in next. Repeat from * to end.

Row two return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row three forward: Insert hook under vertical thread of next, yarn over and pull up a loop (Tss). Repeat from * to end keeping all loops on hook.

Row three return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * to end.

Repeat rows two & three for pattern.
