Tunisian Popcorn Stitch

⇐ Back to Relief Stitches
This Puff Stitch creates medium and large popcorns, and they way it is done makes it look as if it is worked right into the fabric. To work it, three double crochets are made in the intended stitch and brought together as in a decrease (DC3Tog). The following pattern explains the exact procedure, placing them close together in an alternating sequence.

To complete a Popcorn Stitch: * Yarn over and insert hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * two more times, working into the same stitch space. Yarn over and pull through four loops on hook.

To begin: Chain in multiples of four to desired length plus three.

Row one forward: Insert hook in next chain space and pull up a loop. * Insert hook into next, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * to end keeping all chains on hook. Row one return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row two forward: Work a Simple Stitch (Tss) in next. Inserting hook through fabric between vertical threads (as in a Tks) make a Popcorn in next. * Simple Stitch in next three, inserting hook as in a Knit Stitch, Popcorn in next. Repeat from * to end. Row two return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row three forward: Work a Simple Stitch (Tss) in next two. Inserting hook through fabric between vertical threads (as in a Tks) Popcorn in next. * Simple Stitch (Tss) in next three, inserting hook as in a Knit Stitch work a Popcorn in next. Repeat from * to end. Row three return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Repeat rows two & three for pattern.
