Tunisian Basketweave

⇐ Back to Stitch Patterns

This uses two different stitches to create the look of wide weaving. For this pattern I have used the Knit Stitch and the Reverse Stitch, because there is a seamless transition between the stitches and the Trs has a little more relief than say, the Tps, giving it a more realistic look and feel. Any two stitches can be used to create Basketweave; ideally one being a stitch that pulls the thread vertical, and one which pulls the threads horizontal (creating the weaved look). You can also make the weaves bigger or smaller by adding or reducing the number of stitches made in each block of stitches and rows...
To begin: Chain in multiples of eight to length desired plus two.

Row one forward: Insert hook into first chain space from hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop.  * Insert into next, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * keeping all loops on hook.

Row one return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row two forward:(***) (*) Insert hook in next through the vertical bars and under the horizontal bars, yarn over and pull up a loop (Tks). Repeat from * three more times. ** Move hook to back of work and then insert hook from side to side under back thread (as in a Tss but from the back and using the back vertical bar), yarn over and pull up a loop (Trs). Repeat from ** three more times. Repeat from *** to end. Simple Stitch in last.

Row two return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row three & four: Repeat row two.

Row five - eight forward: (***) (*) Move hook to back of work and then insert hook from side to side under back thread (as in a Tss but from the back and using the back vertical bar), yarn over and pull up a loop (Trs). Repeat from * three more times. ** Insert hook in next through the vertical bars and under the horizontal bars, yarn over and pull up a loop (Tks). Repeat from ** three more times. Repeat from *** to end. Simple Stitch in last.

Row five - eight return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Row nine - twelve forward: (***) (*) Insert hook in next through the vertical bars and under the horizontal bars, yarn over and pull up a loop (Tks).

Row nine - twelve return: Yarn over and pull back through one loop. * Yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat from * until one loop remains on hook.

Repeat from row five for pattern.
